Vermont Farmers Markets Now Open!

by Nancy Jenkins, CRB, CRS

It’s June, and farmers’ markets are in full swing across Vermont! Localvores can again fill their bags with fresh, locally grown produce and signature Vermont food items, like artisan cheese and VT-raised, grass-fed beef.

While rain and flooding have delayed many first crops, there is still a wealth of fresh veggies and homemade foods to be had.

Last Saturday, the Burlington Farmers Market, in City Hall Park, was hopping. I ate a delicious lunch of vegetarian tamales covered in a tangy pico de gallo sauce and, for dessert, picked up some homemade Moroccan fig cookies.

King of the vegetables right now are lettuce and herbs—and also plants to take home for your garden. Pretty soon, there will cucumbers, tomatoes, peppers, cauliflower, pears, and strawberries!

As most localvores would agree, farmers’ markets aren’t just a place to stock up on food—they’re a place to run into old friends, talk to farmers, learn about seasonal vegetables, get new recipes, and dig into the richness of local community life.

Studies show that consumers have ten times as many conversations at farmers markets as they do at a supermarket. And as Bill McKibben, a Vermont author, educator, and environmentalist, has said, “When you go to the farmers're not just acquiring tomatoes, you're making friends.” This is a fun way to support your health—and the local Vermont economy—at the same time!

Hope to see you around at a farmers’ market this weekend!
