Mt. Mansfield - Underhill, Vermont Cross-country skiing in Vermont started in Underhill Center with a group of local enthusiasts who began clearing trails in the mid-1960s. These trails, which in most cases crisscross private property, have been actively maintained by local residents and the town much like the Public Footpath system in England to the benefit of all. Cross-country skiing is still a very popular sport among Underhill residents as the town affords miles of scenic trails and mountain passes to explore. Underhill State Park, a local treasure, lies at the headwaters of Brown’s River on the west slope of Mt. Mansfield, Vermont’s highest peak. Four trails lead from the park to Mt. Mansfield’s 4,300-foot summit. Many Underhill town services and events are provided in cooperation with the neighboring town of Jericho.
