Winooski Vermont Real Estate
The city of Winooski, Burlington’s closest neighbor to the north, is a bustling community that has benefited from two major urban renewal projects. The word Winooski, derived from the Abenaki name for the river that flows through the city, is loosely translated as “the place of the wild leeks.” The impressive set of waterfalls on the Winooski River fueled several major mills in the nineteenth-century, helping to establish Winooski as an important manufacturing center in Vermont. In the 1980s, a number of mills were converted to commercial and residential use: the Champlain Mill was beautifully restored in 1981 to become the site of a popular, up-scale shopping mall; and the Woolen Mill, a former textile mill, was restored to maximize views of the Winooski River falls. The Champlain Mill, with its classic brick façade, remains a dominant architectural feature of downtown Winooski. The community provides for a thriving Farmer’s Market, Community Gardens, and a popular Skate Park.
Winooski, Vermont Real Estate Market
With home costs in the Great Burlington Area at record highs, Winooski has become an attractive option for first-time homebuyers. An influx of savvy young couples seeking to avoid high-mortgage areas has served to transform the city from an overlooked industrial center to an affordable, hip Vermont community.
