The charming township of Fairfax is across the border from Chittenden County, lying just south of the Franklin County seat of St Albans. Open, unspoiled countryside characterizes the town's landscape. The Lamoille River, one of the largest rivers in the state, flows through Fairfax, creating a dramatic 28-foot falls, which powered several mills in the area. The Lower or Maple Street Covered bridge (1865) is the last of the town's four original covered bridges. Three were swept away in the great flood of 1927.
