A neighbor to the exclusive townships of Charlotte and Ferrisburgh, Monkton is a quiet town best known for its dramatic mountain views. The surrounding and encompassing Green Mountains provide a dramatic backdrop for local activities like hiking, snowshoeing, fishing, and biking. Little Otter Creek and its tributaries flow northwest through Monkton and Ferrisburgh into Lake Champlain. The village of Monkton Ridge overlooks beautiful Cedar Lake, named for the tall cedars that cast their reflection into the water. Monkton's hills and mountains are filled with natural curiosities, including, in the northwest part of the town, a huge cavern whose entrance lies at the bottom of a deep chasm . Iron ore was mined from Monkton and processed in nearby Vergennes for weapons manufacturing during the Revolutionary War.
